Shiregreen lose – Elsecar in 3rd Place – Denaby beat League leaders
Most notable rise in the South Riding League last week end was Elsecar’s step up to third place in Division “A” by their defeat of Rockingham. Hemsworth lost their second match – to Denaby and Cadeby – while Wath climbed another rung by their defeat of Mexborough, who slipped below Frickley by just over 3%. Shire green were not engaged in the league – they lost their fixture with E.S.C.– while, Swinton continue hard on their heels with another success against City Police.
Denaby and Cadeby offer the crowd at Tickhill Square all they could expect for their gate money, three of them reaching the Honours Board – Munden with an accomplished century, Richardson got into the 60s, and Bacon who was among the Hemsworth wickets – the side defeating the leaders of division” A” of the South Riding League
it was a day of disaster for league leaders: Shire green lost their second council match of the season, though in their case it was not a Riding League fixture.
Elsecar’s nine run victory over Rockingham took them to third place in Division one of the South Riding league – unseating their opponent from that rung in the ladder.
The Cottonwood – Thorncliffe match was interesting in that the Bramptonians had six wickets down for 64 and piled up a double century to win, the seventh wicket adding 69 and the last wicket 49.

Swinton 137 for 5 Sheffield City Police 136
Ben Bailey, Swinton’s 19-year-old bowler was the rue main reason for his sides five wicket win over Sheffield City Police on Saturday at Swinton. Taking six for 55, Bailey helped to dismiss the Police for 136, and Swinton were left plenty of time to get the runs. J Bellamy (27), J Harris (18), H Webster (17) and J Clayton (17) were the chief scorers for Sheffield.
In reply W.B.Broadhead and H. Parkin gave Swinton a good start of 65 for the first wicket before Broadhead went for 33. H.Senior was out the next ball, Parkin (35) but soon afterwards, and with only 80 scored G.kitchen was on his way back. The fifth wicket fell 87, and they should have been another wicket three runs later, when Ward gave a chance to K Clayton, but he was dropped. A Auty and Ward treated the crowd some hard-hitting, although Ward was again dropped. The Police paid for those dropped catches, for Auty and Ward were still there at the end, Auty with 34 not out and Ward with 25 not out. Auty’s knock included a magnificent six off Clayton . H Webster had four for 33 for the Police.

Denaby & Cadeby 231 for 7 Hemsworth 123
There was nothing of the look of potential Yorkshire Council champions about Hemsworth when they visited Denaby and Cadeby on Saturday. Leaders of Section “A” of the South Riding League, they were well and truly beaten. J. Munden, Denaby’s vastly improved opening bat, followed up his 55 the previous week by a glorious undefeated 101. Older ones – in his 90s – did he give the slightest chance, and his two hours 20 min batting was a superb display. The 12 fours and with Jim Richards (66) added 120 for the fourth wicket. Denaby declared at 231 for 7 and dismissed Hemsworth for 123. (D Barrick 16, A Kelvinton 23), K bacon took six for 28 and J Bullard four for 64.
Another Rung
Mexborough 170 Wath 171 for 7
Wath moved another rung of the ladder of the South Riding League table by defeating Mexborough at Mexborough on Saturday by three wickets. Mexborough, given and improve batting display, largest were knock of 50 by S Vickers, before he was run out. The sky was slow and later wickets fell quickly J.C.Heaton, who in his first long spell this season, took six for 47. Mexborough were all out for 170.
After losing an early wicket, was made light of their task and S Ellis and G Feirn treated the Mexborough attack with scant respect. They were not part of to the score reach 123, when Feirn was caught on the boundary. Ellis, followed soon afterwards for 43 in his second ball and spell, took four quick wickets to give Mexborough a chance again. Darley (not out 15) and K Phillips (17) make certain of a Wath victory, however, the total was passed with three wickets and 10 min to spare Hydes finished with five for 50.
