Barnsley Reserves, at home, only shared the spoils with Wath Athletic, who did creditably in securing an equal division of the four goals scored. At times Barnsley ran through their opponents’ lines, but the front rank, with Hine and Retford away, lacked its customary finishing strength. Carter and Dixon scored for Wath, and Armstrong (from a penalty) and Hammerton for Barnsley,. who gave a trial to Sewell, a centre-half from the North, who shaped consistently well. Duke reappeared in the home vanguard, in which Curran was the shining light, and Halliwell, behind him, the best half-back en the field, with Nuttall a persevering pivot for Wath, who had a good right-wing in Holt and Wroe, and a defence which got through a lot of difficult work in praiseworthy style.

Mexborough Win Well.

Mexborough were well worth the two points which they took from Lincoln City Reserves at Hampden Road. Their forwards played exceedingly well together and bad the Lincoln defence not been on the top of its form a big score might have been registered. As it was Mexborough got the ball home three times, through Walker, Ingham and Reed, and had a penalty, with which Cox failed to score. Lincoln, in the closing stages, had the home defence fully extended. Forbes, their centre-half, acquitted himself splendidly. Mexborough were two up at the interval and the third goal, scored by Reed, was easily the best of the match. Harry Walker, who turned out at centre-forward for Mexborough, was decidedly clever.

Half-back weakness was mainly responsible for Wombwell’s defeat by Castleford by 3-1 at Wombwell, though Castleford were the cleverer side all round. Wombwell had the better of the exchanges until ten minutes before half-time, when Bolsover gave them the lead. Just before the cross-over, however. Roe equalised. The visitors were a greatly improved team after the interval, end for long spells at a time they had Wombwell confined to their own half. Booth gave Castleford another goal, and, just before time, Roe increased the lead, Robins, Roe, and Waddington were big factors in Castleford’s success.

Worksop Run Grimsby Reserves Off Their Feet

Grimsby Town Reserves fell easy prey to Worksop, who ran their opponents off their feet at Blundell Park, winning by 5-0.
