The Wednesday Reserves, who won 2 – 1 at Hillsborough, lost by the same score at Denaby. The home team were worth the points, though their visitors were reduced to play only 10 men when the game was quite young, and, for a short spell, only nine.

Wright had to retire into the recovered from the effects of a heavy fall, after Randall, eight minutes from the start, had retired for the afternoon with injured knee.

Denaby played a dashing game, and rained shots all-round Birch. But for the goalkeeper and Ramsbottom, the visitors won back, the colliery team might have put up a big score. Geoff Dickinson deputise well for frog at centre half, and Binney, Trotter and ensure were conspicuous at times. The visitors showed to advantage too late.

Bracknell scored for Denaby near the interval, Hamilton increased the lead immediately on resuming, and Henshall reduced it 10 minutes later.

Wombwell  3  Grimsby Town Res  0

Though Wombwell augmented their poor scoring record by three goals against Grimsby Town Reserve at Wombwell, it cannot be said that they have remedied their forward weakness. Indeed, the three inside men were lacking at times, out of joint all through. Otherwise the Hough Lane has played purposeful football.

The first half was fairly evenly balanced. Bolsover gave Wombwell the lead as the whistle sounded for the interval. The later stages of the second half were full of incident. Grimsby equalised through Morgan, who caught the ball on the rebound. Later, Miller, Grimsby’s centre half, beat his own goalkeeper with a 25 yard drive, and Bramley increased Wombwell’s lead.

Grimsby perhaps deserved a share of the spores, but Miller’s action was an unpardonable blunder.

A Penalty Incident

Mexborough  2  Castleford Town  0

Castleford Town were beaten at Mexborough by two clear goals in a very fast and exciting game, the home side having quite the better of it. The shooting at the outset was very bad, but it improved, and Jarvis, the Castleford goalkeeper, was kept very busy later in the game. Mexborough went ahead as a result of a penalty, but Hill failed with his first attempt, missing the goal completely. The referee ordered the kick to be retaken, however, and the second time Hill made no mistake about it.

The second goal came straight from the kick-off on exchanging ends, Walker getting through very neatly. Mexborough’s three new players, who were tried, gave a very promising display. They were Bullock, of Barnburgh and Hudson and Abbott, both of the Sheffield district, Hudson in particular, being very good.
