Wath Military Medallist Received Presentations in His Pit Clothes

On Wednesday last, Mr G.H. Ashwin, agent and general manager of the Wath Main Colliery Co Ltd presented private Thomas Jewkes, Northumberland Fusiliers, with his military medal to been awarded to him for conspicuous bravery in attending to wounded, and carrying messages under heavy fire in May 1916 on the Somme.

The Presentations were made in the colliery yard, as the morning shift came out, so that a number of the staff, including Captain B.H. Pickering, the Manager.

The rather unique feature of the presentation was at Jewkes by his own wish, was in his pit clothes, just as he came out of the pit.
