New Council Chairman.
Wath ratepayers will be pleased to hear of the election of Coun. Philip Brady Nicholson, J.P., as chairman of Wath Urban Council for the third time.
Coun. Nicholson, who is manager of the by-product plant at Cortonwood Colliery, has had a long experience of public affairs. He has been a member of Thrybergh Parish Council and Brampton Parish Council. In 1917 he was made a governor of Mexborough Secondary School and continued until 1930. From 1919 to 1925 he was a member of the Rotherham Board of Guardians. In 1920 he was elected to Wath Urban Council and has held his seat uninterruptedly. He was chairman in 1925-26 and 1935-36. He is chairman of Wath Grammar School Governors and has been three times chairman of Wath Joint Hospital Board.
He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1928. In 1930 he was appointed to the Management Committee of Mexborough Montagu Hospital. Coun. Nicholson was presented to King George V and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace in 1922 on the occasion of the marriage of the Princess Royal to Lord Harewood.
Coun. Nicholson has fought some memorable elections, and contested the Wentworth Division as a Liberal at the 1929 election. In 1926 he contested a County Council election and in one the heaviest polls the district has known was beaten by Mr. O. A. Hollingworth. Mr. Nicholson was one of the founders of the Coke Oven Managers’ Association, and is honorary treasurer and was president in 1926-27. He has filled many technical posts and is accepted as one of the leading authorities on his industry in this country.
His daughter. Miss Mary S. Nicholson, M.B., Ch.B., has this week been appointed a medical officer at Grantham Hospital.
