New Councillors – Alwayne Fairhurst

Well known and respected in the wharf area, Mr Alwayne Fairhurst, of 23, Fitzwilliam Avenue, Wath, has, during his 18 year service at Wath Main colliery worked his way up from a wagon shop hand to the position of manager.

He was educated at Wath, and on leaving school went to Wath Main colliery in the wagon shop. After 18 months of this work he went underground, and was promoted deputy, and then Overman. He was appointed manager in September, 1938.

For the past few years he has done excellent work as a teacher of mining subjects at Park Road evening Institute, and he has gained many distinctions in similar subjects.
