Mr Donald Oscar Shaw (Independent) who defeated Labour candidate Mr JW Champion, in the Central Ward, was born in the Ward he will represent, his father being at one time manager of Johnson’s, wine and spirit merchants.

He has been employed at Manvers Main colliery for 22 years, and has held his present position of accountant and cashier since 1933.

He has more recently been appointed secretary for the Manvers Main Pit head baths.

Mr Shaw, who is a member and auditor of Wath Club, was at one time a member of the Wath Yorkshire Council Cricket eleven.

He served in the war in the Royal Garrison Artillery and saw service in France. He is a member of the Gothic Lodge of Freemasons.

Mr Shaw has been successful at his first attempt at local government representation.
