New Under-Manager.

Mr. C. H. Hodkin, of 22 Strafford Place. Thorpe, has been appointed under-manager at Wath Main Colliery.

Mr. Hodkin has been continuously employed at the Thorncliffe Collieries of Messrs. Newton Chambers and Co., Ltd. since he commenced work in April. 1920. Since he obtained his first-class Mine Manager’s  Certificate he has been engaged as overman. He takes with him the good wishes of officials and workmen, his duties having been carried out in a conscientious and efficient manner.

Mr. Hodkin is the third man to be promoted from the Thorncliffe Colliery in the last three years to the position of under-manager This is largely due to the facilities and encouragement given by the firm to mining students. Mr Hodkin has by grit and perseverance qualified for his present position.

A pit boy, born under the shadow of Barley Hall colliery wheels, his grandfather was banksman up to his retirement.                His father, who met his death by accident, worked at Barley Hall for many years.

Mr. Hodkin has trained assiduously for the position he now occupies.
