“Newlyweds” Have To Go Into Lodgings
Reference to the dearth of houses in the Wath district was made the District Council meeting last night when Mr. D Burgin said there was real need for houses other than those proposed for erection under slum clearance schemes.
Mr. W Popplewell said that a great many young people were wanting houses and the whole matter had become a vexed question. Young people particularly were having to into lodgings after getting married.
Mr. A. Dailey said that Wath was only like other neighbouring districts in that respect and there were large waiting lists for houses in most areas.
The Clerk (Mr. W. H. Roberts), said there was no subsidy fur any such houses and the Council could not afford to pay out rates the difference between the cost of houses and economic rents.
It was reported that 22 cases of diphtheria had been notified during the month, five of which were negative, and in hospital from the district were 14 cases diphtheria and two of scarlet fever.
