Permitted Licensing Hours – No Extension

At the annual licensing sessions of the Rotherham West Riding justices on Monday, Police Superintendent Horton reported that there were 210 licences in the division, one less than last year.

These included 87 full licences, 25 beerhouses, four spirits off Iicences, 86 beer-off licences, and eight wine and spirit licences. The population of the division at the last census was 100,757, an average, taking classes of licences of one to every 479. There were 53 registered clubs in this division, and the membership 15,099, a decline of a little more than 1,000 during the past year.

Last year 180 persons were proceeded against for drunkenness, as against 248 in the previous year, and 172 were convicted.

An application was made for a variation in the permitted hours at Rawmarsh. Parkgate, Mexborough, Swinton and West Melton. Mr A. S. Furniss, who made the application, asked that the evening closing hour should be 10.30, as in the Borough of Rotherham, and the opening hour 6.0 instead 5.30. The magistrates. however, refused the application.

A provisional full licence was granted for premises at Thrybergh which ought to be ready in May.

Amended plans for alterations to the Red House, Swinton, were submitted.

The Bench Indicated that they were not inclined to grant an application for a provisional licence at Brampton Bierlow, and this application, as well as an application for an off-licence at Wath was withdrawn.

The Bench also refused an application to extend the hours of licensed billiards saloons in the division, and to reduce the age limit for persons admitted to these places.
