Retirement of a Wath Manager
A Worthy Career

A banking connection with Wath on Dearne extending over a period of 50 years terminates on May 31, Mr JW Robson retires from the management of the Wath branch of the Midland Bank.

Mr Robson’s association with Wath began in the year 1877, as a junior clerk with the Barnsley banking Company, and this has continued unbroken, he having become clerk in charge in the year 1889, and manager since 1900, when the Wath office was constituted a full branch.

By his unfailing courtesy, Mr Robson has won the respect and esteem of the customers of the bank in the wide area serve by the branch.

As treasurer to several authorities, including the Urban Councils of Wath on Dearne and Thurnscoe, the Gas Board, the Electricity Board, the Hospital Board, the Light Railways, the Secondary School, and Brampton Parish Council, he has rendered services which the authorities named have been pleased to record and recognise recently by cordial expressions of appreciation.

During his long residence in Wath he has been happy to give willing and useful service in an official capacity to, amongst others, the Athletic Club, Golf Club, Mechanics Institute, Evening Schools and Relief Committee.

As a token of their regard for the retiring manager, the Wath staff recently presented him with a beautiful and costly silver ink stand, bearing a suitable inscription. All those who have had a business association with Mr Robson will wish him happiness and the best of health for many years to come.

Mr GW Downend, who succeeds Mr Robson as manager, has been accountant at the Wath branch for the past seven years, and will doubtless prove himself a fitting successor and justify his appointment by retaining the confidence and support alike of the Bank, customers and staff.

It is interesting to note that Mr Downend, who has experience at several important branch of the bank, entered the services at Market Hill, Barnsley, as did his predecessor in this important appointment.
