Swinton on Top At Thorncliffe
Thorncliffe, for their home match with Swinton on Saturday, lacked the services of F. Hollingsworth, Harry Whitham, E. Marshall, and Jack Baxter and met with a big reverse.
Batting first, Thorncliffe had five wickets down with only 49 runs on the board. Their last five wickets only added 15 runs and the innings closed for 64 (H. Moore 21, E. Fletcher 10). A Vickers and F. Ellis bowled unchanged for Swinton, taking 6 for 43 and 4 for 18 respectively. Swinton replied with 65 for two (L. Bedford 35, G. Barnett 18 not out, F. Hadfield 10).
Nine Wickets Win for Mexboro’
Mexborough had a comfortable nine wickets win over Elsecar in their first home match on Saturday. The first three Elsecar wickets fell for 15, but Sykes (29 and Evans (23) took the score to 47 for four. The final score was 87. Mullen, whose five wickets cost only 37 runs, upset the visitors and Hayes (3 for 26) and Padley (2 for 22) gave him excellent backing.
Mexborough sent in C. Wilkinson and E. Plummer and it seemed as if they would knock off the runs until Wilkinson was bowled by Burgin with the score at 61, of which Wilkinson had made 28. Dawson (10 not out) helped Plummer to win the match. Plummer played a grand innings of 42 not out, including two sixes. For Elsecar, Burgin took 1 for 24.
Batsmen on Top at Wath
Batting 2¼ hours each, Rockingham 168 for seven declared, had the better of a drawn game at Wath, where the home team replied with 123 for 4 wickets. J. Ivill and H. Wroe took Rockingham’s score to 91 before the veteran was bowled by Beecham for a well-played 54. B. Ivill (20) stayed with Wroe until 133 when the latter was bowled for 47.
For Wath, D. Fieldsend took 3 for 50 and R. Cutts 2 for 26. After Rippon (13) was out at 17, R. Cutts (34) and S. Ellis put on 84 for the second wicket. H. Fish and C. Vickers both kept a good length and it was only when they were rested that runs came more freely. With their return three wickets fell quickly, but Ellis (52 not out) and W. Hinchliffe (11 not out) were together when stumps were drawn. Fish had 2 for 28 and Vickers 2 for 33.
