Rotherham Town’s Narrow Win Over Wath Athletic.
Wath Athletic made their first appearance under Midland League auspices at Clifton Lane last night, when they met Rotherham Town. An attendance of 4,000 witnessed a match full of interest.
Town had the greater number of chances in the first half, although they had to face a strong breeze and a blazing sun. The luck was decidedly against the home side, whose forward line worked fairly well. On two occasions, they ought to have found the net, as a result of melees immediately in front of goal, but Topham was alert, and he was well supported. The wing to wing play of Wath was a feature, and in one of their advances, Westwood put the ball cleverly at the feet of Booth, who found it an easy matter to open the scoring after 35 minutes.
Glennon equalised from short range, after a mix-up in the Wath defence, soon after the resumption. A period .of tameness ensued, and then Glennon shot across, hitting the post. A foul close in gave Rotherham another opportunity, but Topham succeeded in clearing. The attack was now much less convincing. The end was near at hand, when Hurst provided the winning goal, Moorhouse having a share in the movement which led to it.
