Wath Sailor Fell in Battle

Seaman Albert Edward Oldham

Able Seaman Albert Edward Oldham, 126 Sandymount Road, Wath, was killed in action in the North Seas, whilst serving with H.M.S. Southampton.

The news was broken to his parents by two of his shipmates from Mexborough.

Seaman Oldham has taken part in four naval battles, including Heligoland and Dogger Bank, and the skirmish with the Scarboro’ raiders. His shipmates say that he lived through the day – (May 31st) – but at night a shell burst on his gun, and he was instantly killed. He had been in the Navy 6 1/2 years and was 25 years of age.
