Scattergood Family Provide Remarkable Co-Incidence At Wath
During the past 45 years, the Don and Dearne Schools’ Under 13’s soccer , trophy, the West Shield, has been won by a Wath school only twice, and both teams have had a member of the Scattergood family in the half-back line.
This has been revealed in two photographs which shows Colin Scattergood in the white shirt and dark hoops standing on the extreme left, and on the other photograph his uncle, the late Mr. Will Scattergood also standing on the extreme left.
County Honours
Mr. Scattergood was a member of Wath National School team, which was perhaps one of the finest teams ever to play in the Don and Dearne. Three members of this winning team of 1921-22 gained Yorkshire County Schoolboys’ caps. They were Pears (standing third from left), Ratford (seated second from right) and Wilkinson (seated extreme right). Wilkinson had the added distinction of gaining an England international schoolboy cap. In addition to wearing one on his head for the photograph he is also holding one in his right hand.
Seven of the team went on to play professional football. Ratford and Wilkinson produced a partnership which is well remembered from Dearne Valley Old Boys to Wath Athletic in the Midland League days, then Sheffield Wednesday and later Sheffield United.
Mr. Scattergood died at Keighley six years ago. He was the brother of Mr Horace Scattergood, who played football tor Denaby United and Frickley Colliery, and the father of Colin, left-half of the 1966-67 Wath Grammar Comprehensive school winning team. His father, an overman at Wath Main Colliery, is President of Wath Athletic, and lives at 164, Chapel Street, Wath
