Shot-Firing Competition
Innovation at Manvers Main
With the object of perfecting shotfiring in the mines owned by the Manvers Main Collieries. Ltd., a shot-firing competition is now in progress and the eliminating round took place on Sunday, August 10th.
The scheme, which is the first of its kind, was introduced by Mr. Fred Hall, the Safety Inspector at Manvers Main, and has been fully supported by Mr. J. Bell, the Agent, and Messrs. G. C. Payne and E J. Kimmins, managers.
The scheme was put before the Directors of the Company, who generously provided a cup for annual competition and prizes for the finalists. There was a large entry and it was necessary to hold the eliminating round in three sections; one at Barnburgh with Mr. E. J. Kimmins as adjudicator; one at Manvers Boys’ Club; with Mr. G. C. Payne as adjudicator; and one at Manvers Pithead Baths, with Mr. F. Hall adjudicating.
From each of these sections, two competitors go forward to the final, and the following were successful: Barnburgh, A. Cadman and T. Foster; Manvers Boys’ Club. S. White and T. Holmes; Manvers Baths. T. Palframan and L. Phillips.
The final round is to take place at Barnburgh Colliery on Sunday morning, August 17th, and a realistic scene has been arranged where each finalist will fire an actual shot It is expected that prominent people in the mining industry will be present.
