November 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times November 17, 1917

Private George Briggs
York and Lancaster

Private Briggs of Adwick sidings, Wath on Dearne, has been killed in action in France, being shot through the head by a sniper. He was 29 years of age and enlisted in August 1914.

He had seen service in Egypt and at Sulva Bay (Gallipoli) before going to France 14 months ago.

His sister Mrs Kelly of 9 Common Ln, Wath on Dearne, received a message of sympathy from Capt TH Sullivan in which he says:

“Your brother was killed in October 9. He was a great loss to all the regiment, and especially the stretcher bearers. He was a glorious example to all who knew him, and all that a good soldier ought to be.”
