Private Charles Cusworth
York and Lancaster
Private Cusworth of 13, Firth Lane, West Melton, was killed in action on Oct. 9, aged 26. He went to France in Oct., 1915, and was serving as a machine gunner when he met his death.
His brother, Pte. W. Cusworth (Y. and L.) is serving in France, and a half-brother, Pte. J. Beever, was killed in action on November 17th.
Private Charles Cushworth’s mother has received the following message from Sec.-Lieut. F. E. Allen:
“I am writing on behalf of the officers and men of this company to assure you of our deepest sympathy in your recent sad bereavement occasioned by the death of your son, who was killed in action on Oct. 9.
Your son, who was killed by a sniper during the advance, was without exception the bravest and most fearless man I have ever met: He was a very fine Lewis-gunner, and has, ever since he has been with this battalion, been greatly admired by all. He was a general favourite among his comrades and those with whom he came in touch. Of a very cheery disposition, he was one of those rare men who when shell-fire was at its hottest could laugh and joke.
You may indeed be proud of your son, for his name is one which will be long remembered by us all. I cannot tell you how much we miss him, but do indeed assure you of our sympathy. He was buried on the battlefield by our own troops.”
