Soldier – Dickinson Stanley, Victor – Killed by Sniper

September 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times September 14, 1918

Private Stanley V Dickinson
York and Lancaster

Mrs C.E.Grove, 28 Midland Terrace, Wath on Dearne, has been notified that her son, Stanley B Dickinson (York and Lancaster) has been killed by a sniper.

He enlisted in the territorials, and was for some time battalion tailor, until December, 1917, when he was transferred to the Hallamshires. He was wounded last April at Armentieres, and returned to the line in July.

On July 17 he was out on patrol when he was shot dead. He came of a military family. His grandfather was a soldier, and his father has served two years and eight months in Salonica, and several months in France.

Private Dickinson was 21 years of age, and formerly worked at the Wath Main Colliery.

His mother has received the following letter from Sec.-Lieut. W. II. Oliver: “On behalf of the company commander and men of B company, I tender to you our heartfelt sympathy in your sad bereavement occasioned by the loss of your dear son. He was hit early in the day-by a Sniper, while carrying out his duty, and death was almost instantaneous. Words are of small comfort at the time, but in the future the pain may be softened by the thought that if he could have chosen death it would have been to die as he did, in the protection of his people and his country.

You mourn the loss of a son, his officers, notice a good soldier missing; his comrades lose a hearty and cheering friend, and I express the thoughts of all in these few words of sympathy to you in your dark hour.”

Pte. W. Parry, a comrade of Pte. Dickinson, has also sent a message of sympathy
