Killed In Hospital
A Wath Victim Of German Brutality
The wife of Gunner Ben E Ellis (R.F.A.) of Wath on Dearne, has received official news that her husband has been killed. He was in a Canadian hospital in Etaples, France, with slight sickness, when on 20 May the enemy bombed the hospital from the air, and he was killed along with others, a result of the cowardly and brutal act.
He enlisted in May 1915, in the Wentworth R.H.A.. After going to France he was often employed as cook to the officers mess.
The major commanding his battery rights:
“There was no better in the line or out of it; he was always cheery and bright, and one of the most willing and industrious men in the battery, and will be much missed on account of his kindly disposition.
Accept my very deep sympathy in your loss.”
Gunner Ellis was 24 years of age, and leaves a wife and one little daughter. He is one of three soldier sons of Mr J.T.and Mrs Ellis, Wath on Dearne, and was a member of the men’s Bible class at West Melton Congregational Church and an energetic member of the football club connected with the same.
