Private R. Green
(York and Lancs)

Private Robert Green, of the second Battalion York and lines, only son of Mr and Mrs W Green, Moreau, was, and nearly 23 years of age has been killed.
A letter was sent to his parents by a chum, telling of his death and also one from his platoon officer who says:

“Dear Mr and Mrs Green,
it is with deep regret to have to write this letter to inform you that your son was killed by shrapnel bullets on 26 July. He and several others were sitting outside the dugout making some tea and a shell burst overhead. A piece struck your boy in the head, and he died shortly afterwards. All his comrades and myself joining send in their deepest sympathy to you, and the only consolation we can offer you is to remind you that he did his duty to his mother, father and country.

We took all his treasures from his pocket. Enclosed you will find his letters, and the other things will reach you later. Do not grieve, he has done his bit.”
Private Green only been out in France a short time, and his death is a great blow to his father and mother
