Died On Active Service
Widespread sympathy will be extended to the widow and family of Sgt. Major F. S. Hargreaves, who have received information of his death in India on Sept 3rd, from dysentery.
He had previously suffered from malaria, but a cheerful letter dated Aug. 28th, said he was convalescent at St. Edmond’s College, and there were prospects of him being invalided home. Consequently, the cable notifying his death came as a very great shock.
Fred was highly esteemed in the district, especially in football circles. In his younger days he was associated with the leading clubs in the district. West Melton Congs, Wath Albion and later Wath Athletic. For Several years he was a member of the Athletic Club General Committee. He was employed at Manvers Main Collieries.
As a Territorial he was called up at the outbreak of hostilities, and served in the A. A. Section of the R.A. He was a very popular N.C.O. It is about 12 months since his company landed in India, having previously had a spell in the Middle East.
Sgt. Hargreaves was 48, he leaves a widow, four daughters and a son, A.C.1. Stanley Hargreaves, who is at present serving in the Middle East. A memorial service will be held at the Parish church on Sunday evening.
