Captain E.D. B. Johnson
of the firm of Johnson and Sons, wine and spirit merchants Wath on Dearne, went out to the front in April 1915, in command of the Wath company, 1/5 York and Lancaster regiment.
During a heavy bombardment he was gassed, and subsequently being mentioned in dispatches was awarded the Military Cross.
He also received a handsome testimonial from a body of Wath subscribers.
