Soldier’s Fatal Injuries
A mother’s vain dash to London to see her son before he died was described to a “Times” reporter, when he visited the home of Signalman Howard Slater Lambert (27), only son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lambert, of 67, Sandymount Road, Wath, who died following an accident on the, outskirts of London on Friday night while carrying out his duties as a despatch rider.
Signalman Lambert was admitted to a hospital on Friday but died at 9-45 p.m. the following night. His mother received a telegram in Saturday morning stating that he was dangerously ill and, accompanied by her’ son-in-law. Mr. Joseph Bell, of 27, Raikes Street, Mexborough, immediately dashed to London, arriving there at 12-20 a.m. on Sunday to find that her son had died.
Signalman Lambert joined the Army last November and took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk. Before joining up he was employed by Messrs. Whitaker’s of Bank Street, Mexborough. He was formerly racing secretary of the Mexborough Cycling Club and was also a member of the Mexborough and Don Valley Motor Cycle and Light Car Club. He won a number of trophies while attached to these clubs and for three years held the Club record for 88 miles. He was well-known in cycling circles throughout the country.
A native of Mexborough, he attended the National School. He was unmarried. Only last week he returned to his unit from leave. This week we received a letter from the Mexborough and Don Valley Motor Cycle and Light Car Club which read:
The Club learn with deep regret of the death, following an accident of one of their members. Howard Lambert, who, was serving with the Royal Corps of Signals. He was a very popular member. being a keen and active rider. We send our deepest sympathy to his parents.”
Signalman Lambert’s funeral will take place at St. George’s Church, Mexborough on Sunday at 1 p.m.
