Major J. E. B. Smith
Seriously Wounded by Shell
Mrs. Smith, of Burlington Cottage, Wath, was officially informed this week that her husband, Major J. E. Brooke Smith, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Smith, of West Melton, had been wounded while serving In the Central Mediterranean area, and was placed on the seriously ill list on May 23rd. He is suffering from a shell wound, compound fracture of the left ankle, right leg and foot, and cordite burns.
Major Smith, who is a partner in the firm of Messrs. Tiptaft and Smith chartered accountants, of Mexborough, was in the Reserve of Officers before the war and joined up soon after the outbreak, in the Royal Tank Regiment where he gained quick promotion.
He fought in the Tunisian campaign up to the final battle for Tunis, and after an action which occurred on April 9th last year, he was awarded the Croix de Guerre.
