York and Lancaster
Sergeant Smith of 31, Winifred-road, Wath – upon – Dearne, was killed in action on November 20, in France, while leading his men into action.
He was single, aged 20, and his home was with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Smith, at the above address. He enlisted in Nov., 1914, and went to the Front 9 months ago.
Before enlistment he worked at the Manvers Main Colliery.
The Rev. J Alfred Kaye.. C.F., writes: ‘Your boy was one of our best and most reliable sergeants, and will be difficult to replace. I trust you will find some consolation in knowing that your lad was gallantly leading his men when he fell, and that he suffered no pain.
The Sunday previous I had exhorted the men to confident trust in God their Father, and I know that your boy placed his trust there. All his boys join with me in loving sympathy.”
