Private Sidney Smith, second son of Mr and Mrs R Smith, 2 Firth Rd, West Melton, died of wounds in hospital in Rouen in November 14. It had been necessary to amputate his left leg, and for a few days he seemed to be going on well, but then he had a relapse and another operation was necessary.
From the second operation he never recovered.
He was single, aged 27 and been serving since April 1917. He had been in France seven weeks.
Before enlistment he was employed at Wath Main
His younger brother, Private Reginald Smith, Grenadier Guards, formerly employed at Cortonwood, is serving in France.
