Mexborough and Swinton Times September 8, 1917
Acting Bombardier A Teale
Royal Horse Artillery
Late of Conisbrough, son of Mr Mrs W Teale of Wath upon Dearne was killed in action in July 23.
His mother has received the following message of sympathy from Major C A Pier:
“It is with regret that I have to inform you that your son was killed in action in July 23.
No words of mine can assuage your grief, but it may be some comfort to know that his death was instantaneous and that he could have suffered no pain at all.
We all miss him very much. There was no better, smarter, nor more intelligent NCO in that battery, and had he been spared his promotion would have been rapid. His section were in action in a particularly hot corner, and the men were taking shelter behind the wall when one shell came through the wall, killing your son and wounding three of his pals.
It was a grievous loss to me personally, as he has been with me for over a year, and had been so gallant in all his work, much of which was exceedingly perilous, mending telephone lines under heavy shellfire. We are burying him tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock in a pretty little cemetery just in the rear here.”
Bombardier Teale enlisted in November 1915, and had been in France 16 months.
He was 24 years of age.
