Four Serving Sons

Wath Family’s Record

Two of the four fighting sons of Mrs. and the late Mr. J. T. Gething, of 9, Adwick Sidings, Wath, are now casualties, one a prisoner in the hands of the Japanese and the other with severe wounds in a hospital in this country

Mrs. Gething had heard no news of the youngest son, Gnr. Joseph Gething (21) since he was reported missing in Malaya two years ago, but has now been informed officially that he is a prisoner of the Japanese.  Gnr. Gething, who joined the Army when only 16 by giving his wrong age, formerly worked at Manvers Main.

Pte. John Thomas Gething (24) who joined the Army when only 17, was wounded in France just before Dunkirk and apart from a spell of about three months, has been in hospital ever since with seven wounds.  Pte. Gething, whose wife lives in Mexborough, volunteered two years before the war and previously worked at Manvers Main.

The eldest son of Mrs. Gething was killed in the last war, and the other two, who are serving are Sergt. Gething (31) whose wife lives in Plymouth and who has many years’ Army service, and Sergt. William Gething, aged about 48, of Doncaster Road, Wath, who also has a long record of war service and before war broke out spent nine years with the Army in Egypt. Her eldest grand-daughter, Miss Thurza Pyott of 56, Oak Road, Wath, has been in the W.A.A.F. over a year.
