Three friends who enlisted together have served continuously in England and France, and have just been gazetted to the post of second lieutenant.

They enlisted in September 1914, in the Royal Fusiliers, and went to France last Autumn, serving unwounded through the winter and this year’s offensive.

Mr Clarence Utley, of “Sundal” Cross Street, Wath is also aged 31, and is son of the late Mr Dennis Utley, of Messrs Whitworth, Son and Nephew. Before enlisting he was a maltster at the Wath Brewery. He was educated at Penistone Grammar School.

Mr James Brooke is the youngest son of Mr Edward Smith of Beech House, West Melton, of the drapery firm of Edward Smith and Son. He was a junior partner in the firm. He was educated at Hallgate, Doncaster and is now 31 years of age.

Mr Arthur W Sheard, son of the late Mr George Sheard of the wholesale furniture house, Sheard and Binnington, Doncaster is 29 and resides at Aukland Road Dioncaster.

He like Mr Smith was educated at Hallgate, Donxcaster.

All three are unmarried.
