Great Increase Of Local Tonnage

100,000 Tons More Sent In 4 Months

Whatever may be said as to the depressed state of the coal trade so largely carried on in South Yorkshire, the official return of the coal imported to and from Hull, issued on Tuesday, shows a wonderful increase in the business done by several district firms working the thick seam coal.

The quantity of coal sent by such collieries as Denaby Main, Monk Bretton, Carlton Main, and other firms which raise a good quality of steam coal, last month and during the past four months, calls for some further explanation than is furnished by the bare figures supplied by the return.

In the four months the imports reached 584,312 tons, being exactly 102,000 tons in excess of the corresponding period of 1893. It is found that Denaby Main Co. has not only far out-distanced all other firms in the country, but its increases both for the month and the four months are remarkable, and the figures do fair to verify the prediction put forth some time ago that when the Cadeby Colliery was properly developed they would be the largest coal producers in Yorkshire.

Last month Denaby Main sent 23,080 tons, against 8,560 tons in April, 1893, or an increase of 14,520 tons; whilst the business done in April exceeded that transacted with the port in March by 7,500 tons. During the past four months 66,536 tons were sent—an increase of over 28,000 tons compared with last year.

The new Sharlston Colliery Company takes the second position, which is usually held by Manvers Main, who only supplied 4,320 tons last month, nearly all of which was sent by water. This is about 1,800 tons less than was sent in April last year, and 1,000 tons less than was forwarded in March. Thorncliffe, which last year did not do so much with Hull, is now credited with 3,856 tons, an increase of about 3,600 tons.
