Murden’s Great Goal.
Wath Defence Save a Point at Staveley.
Staveley 3, Wath 3
Wath were rather fortunate to take a point from Staveley on Saturday.
They defended far oftener than they attacked but their defence was splendid. On the Hefrostbound ground both sides gave a creditable display .
Staveley were the more forceful but Wath showed better understanding and finish. Had they enjoyed the chances that went to Staveley they would have won comfortably. The halves, of whom Dennis was the pick, were sound and their ball distribution was good. Skeels and Murden worked together with marked precision and formed by far the best wing on the field. All Wath’s goals were from the work of that wing.
MOORE got the first from Skeels’s well-judged centre and MURDEN (picture) scored the other two. Murden’s second goal was the most brilliant scored on the ground for many a day. He took the ball in his stride 30 yards out and made a lightning shot. Neither Edwards nor the spectators saw the ball till it rested in a corner of the net. For a moment everyone was astounded, but as soon as the spectators recovered they gave Murden’s effort the applause it deserved.
Wath’s first goal was scored after seven minutes in their first visit to the Staveley end, and their second fifteen minutes later. They were kept on defence most of the first half and during the greater part of the second. Bratley and Wheatley were a sturdy and reliable pair but Whittaker was the star of the game. Nutter was enterprising but was generally held by Clarke. The teams were:—
Staveley: Edwards; Lack, Ashall; Jones, Jarrett, Clarke; Pearce, Stevenson, Mead, Eggleshaw, Smith.
Wath: Whittaker; Bratley, Wheatley, Dawber Bedford, Dennis; Nutter, Moore, Smith, Murden, Skeels.
