Keen Contest at Swinton
Wath’s Worthy Win

Swinton 116  Wath 118 for 8

Wath won a keenly contested game, and one in which the issue was in doubt until the last few minutes, at Swinton on Saturday, when they scored two runs more than Swinton with two wickets to fall.

Swinton open slowly, only 25 runs being scored in the first half hour Wath were trying a young bowler, Dave Waddington in their ranks for the first time, and he showed considerable ability as a bowler. Heaton was smartly caught by J Wilson from Waddington’s bowling with only 10 runs to his credit. A partnership between Denton and Thompson managed to revive the Swinton in it, and Wath found it necessary to put Pearce (picture) on to ball. The change over proved successful for Wath, Pearce capturing five wickets for 25 runs. He and Pell caused the Swinton tail to wag but feebly. Pearce took two wickets with successive balls.

Wath first two batsmen opened in lively fashion, Smith scoring 21 and Swinburn 29 before they were dismissed. Stancey was bowling well, and the Wath batsman found his bowling hard to play. Wath still needed 16 runs for victory when T Walker (23), who had batted from second wicket down, tried to make a drive to the boundary, but, just snicking the ball sent it soaring into the air, to drop into the hands of George Price. Shaw and Pell, however, managed to hit up the necessary runs and 118 was reached when Pell became a victim of Stancey’s bowling.
