Swinton’s Best.
Brilliant Fielding Display Against Wath.
Swinton, on their toes against Wath at Swinton on Saturday, were a most impressive side. It was apparently, a batsman’s day; but the rapid early fall of Wath wickets gave Swinton a winning grip on the game which they never surrendered.
The side has not for a long time given so keen a display in the field. It was faultless, apart from one sharp low chance in the slips which Adey—it would, of course, be one of the most reliable of fieldsmen in this ironic game !—just failed to get. But the miss cost little and the Wath batsmen never got the measure of deadly keen bowling that allowed no liberties. Denton’s leg trap held them as in a vice after Pearson had started the rot; and the well-placed field made the batsmen literally force their runs. Price handled his bowling cleverly without over-working any of his main attackers.
The outstanding individual performance in a day of excellent team work was the all-round work of Hart. He bowled far better than he has bowled in any other game this season and carried his bat. Stancey took 3 wickets for 35 runs, Pearson 3 for 39 and Denton 2 for 23. Hargreaves, for once, did not have a feast of Swinton wickets-though Adey and Willoughby fell cheap victims to him. Machin “kept” splendidly and also batted well in the winning partnership with Hart. Wath’s fielding, too, was keen, but their bowling had not the sting of Swinton’s.
