The Census Returns.
Slight Increase of National Population
Some Local Figures.
The preliminary Census returns were issued this week by the Registrar General.
The population of England and Wales is shown to be: 37,885,442 – 18,082,220, males: 19,803,022, females.
The present total is the largest ever recorded in the country and exceeds the 1911 figure by 1,914.750.
There are eighteen provincial cities; with 34 population of over 200,000, Cardiff being the only addition to the list since 1911. Birmingham is at the head of the list with 919, 438, followed by Liverpool, 803,118. Manchester, 730,551. Sheffield, 490,724, Leeds, 458,320.
The population of London (city and county) is 4,483,249, and of Greater London, 7.476,166.
The population of the West Riding is 3,181,654, an increase or 4.5 per cent., and of the whole county of York, 4,192,735. The population of Lancashire is 4,928,359.
The Following are the populations of some of the towns, urban districts, and parishes, in this part of the West Riding:
Bolton-upon-Dearne, 11,957; increase, 3,287.
Conisboro’, 15,859, increase. 186
Darfield, 5,566; increase, 139.
Doncaster, 54,452; increase, 5,597.
Mexboro’, 15,410; increase, 1,009.
Swinton, 13,925; increase, 271.
Thurnscoe. 4,981; increase, 907.
Wath-upon-Dearie, 12,866; increase, 1,043.
Wombwell, 19,635; increase, 1,410.
