Wath Beat The Clock
Wath gained a notable win – their first of the season at Wath—After an exciting race with the clock.
They found runs difficult to get off the keen Frickley bowling and stayed at the creases 3 hours for their 170 runs.
A draw was in prospect, but a wicket in Pearce’s first over—and so valuable one as Peate’s—put a different complexion on the matter. When Pearce bowled Blackburn in his third over Frickley were fighting a rearguard action and Hargreaves never gave them a chance of settling down again. He took over himself when a threat of a stand occurred, got three cheap, wickets, and when Dick Coope began to hit, restored Pearce, who brought his figures to 4 for 11. Some hitting by Cullan spoiled his record, but he got Cardwell and Hargreaves got the Frickley Shaw with only a few minutes left for play.
Pearce finished with 5 wickets for 27 runs and Hargreaves with 4 for 29. Peate took 6 for 72 for Frickley.
The feature of the game, however, was the excellent wicket-keeping. Shaw, the Wath stumper, had a good day, taking four good catches; and Williams stumped two and caught one for Frickley.
