Exciting Finish at Swinton

Wath  187 for 5  Swinton  188 for 1

Scoring at the rate of nearly two runs a minute, Swinton beat their neighbours, Wath, by nine wickets, with two minutes to spare. After batting three hours. Wath declared at 187 for five wickets, and left Swinton 106 minutes to bat, but Leslie Bedford and C. Lee flogged the Wath bowling to such an extent that they put on 182 runs for the first wicket in 100 minutes. C. Heaton (45) and W. Rippon (55), Wath’s opening batsmen, scored 99 for the first wicket, but they played so cautiously that they scored only 20 runs in the first half hour. Other double figure scorers were J. C. Heaton (31 not out) and W. Moore (23 not out), who added 45 runs in an unbroken sixth wicket partnership.

In contrast to the game at Mexborough last week, Swinton’s bowling lacked sting. and F. Ellis (3 for 63) had the best return.

Left with less than two hours in which to bat it seemed that Swinton could only draw, but Bedford and Lee treated the crowd to the best hitting seen on ground for some time. Bedford had four 6’s and six 4’s in his 94, being bowled in an attempt to score the winning hit. Lee was undefeated for 79, including ten 4’s.
