Wath Avenged.
Swinton Beaten In Another Race Against Time.
For the second consecutive week Wath beat the clock to win. Swinton’s last wicket fell on Saturday with only a few minutes to spare, and Wath won by 63 runs.
A very smart catch by Hart, low down at first slip, dismissed Senior with the total only 10, but Hargreaves was in fine form and his partnership with Walker realised 81. Hargreaves completed his 50 out of 72 in an hour and lost his wicket while forcing the game. Walker was bowled at 117 after being at the wicket 100 minutes for 36: an unusually slow rate of scoring for him. For a time the bowlers had the upper hand and though Ellis kept a sound defence his colleagues were in difficulties. Allen left at 120 and Swinburn at 124, both bowled by Denton. Jewsbury was well caught at point at 137 and Wilson, neatly caught at fine leg at 156. Pearce enlivened the same by scoring 11 in the first over, he received, and Ellis also opened out: with the result that the ninth wicket added 37 in fifteen minutes. Ellis’s contribution of 55 not out was a fine effort though he opened slowly.
The Swinton bowling was good. Denton bowled 27consecutive overs. At, the end of his 23rd over he had taken 4 wickets for 34, but Pearce and Ellis took heavy toll of the last four of overs which cost another 34 runs. The fielding on the whole was excellent.
With less than two hours for Swinton to bat, Heaton opened by taking 11 runs of Pearce’s first over, but in the same bowler’s second Ivor Hart was caught; at the wicket. In same over Willoughby gave Senior a chance in the slips. He was also missed twice by Pearce. At 34 Heaton retired hurt after edging a ball on to his body. Wilson caused the batsmen considerable trouble and with the exception of Machin, Heaton (on his return), and later Stables, he was not played with confidence. Machin defended skilfully and picked out the right balls for hitting; ‘two Straight drives for 6 off Hargreaves were great shots. Stables and Machin made a good effort to save the game, and Wilson was recalled to the attack and to end the effort.
Wilson in his first spell of bowling of 15 ovens took 4 for 38 in his second spell of 2 overs his 2 wickets cost 17 runs, giving him 6 wickets for 55 runs.
