Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 25 April 1927
Play in the Midland League on Saturday was featured by the 2-1 defeat of the new champions, Scunthorpe United, at Wath.
Only fortune on Scunthorpe’s side saved them from a much heavier reverse. The visitors took the lead in the first minute, Moore turning a centre from Thompson into the net. Wath, though heavily outweighted, began to assert a superiority; but it was not until the second half that Wheatley equalised from a penalty. Five minutes from the end Hargreaves gave Wath the lead with a very clever goal. In the second half play was almost entirely confined to the Scunthorpe half of the field. Watts, on trial in the visitors’ goal, played an extremely able game, having no chance whatever with the shots that beat him.
