A Wath Partnership
Walker and Smith 194
Wath 221 for 3 dec Barnsley 133
Wath on Saturday gave their most impressive batting display of the season, at Wath, and handsomely beat Barnsley by 89 runs after declaring with only 3 wickets down.
The main factor in this success was a third-wicket partnership of 191 after Hargreaves and Swinburne had been lost for I8 runs.
Walker make the highest score of his career and was out to a good catch at square leg when only 9 runs short of his first century. He gave a sharp chance in the slips when 37 and a low catch to point when 44; otherwise his innings was excellent. Smith’s was a faultless display and during it he showed a welcome return to his free style of two season’s ago. He was at the wickets about two hours for his 110 and carried his bat when Wath declared and left Barnsley an equal length of time to bat, but they started so badly that they never recoverod.
Pell. gave them a terrific shock by taking the wickets of Fieldhouse and Howarth in his first over without a run scored! Later, the same bowler got Hesketh and Kilburn with consecutive deliveries and Barnsley they had 5 wickets down for 23. Richardson and Taylor saved Barnsley from utter rout, and the later batsmen turned the total into an appearance of respectability. Pell finished with 5 wickets for 45 rims. Deighton took 3 for 30. Winfield deputised for Shaw behind the wickets and did very well.
