Cricket Nearing End of Season
Won In Last Two Overs
Castleford, who defeated Hickleton at Thurnscoe on Saturday by five wickets, claimed the extra five overs when wanting 22 to beat Hickleton’s 176. They reached 179 for 5 with one over to spare thanks to a fourth–wicket partnership of 80 by G. Robshaw (51 not out) and J. Tomlinson (34). Hickleton batted slowly until Tommy Mitchell and Johnny Green put on a quick 38 for the ninth wicket, Tommy being stumped when two short of his 50 – a real lively innings. H. Riley made 36, Norton, for Castleford, took 3 for 21.
Day of Catches
It was a day of catches for Dearne Athletic at Bolton against Illingworth. Dearne’s first six wickets down were all caught out and the eighth wicket suffered the same fate. Dearne were dismissed for 91 and Illingworth replied with 92 for 9.
Century Partnership
Arthur Ellis (70 not out) and Jack Munden (44) added 114 for Denaby and Cadeby’s opening partnership against Rossington in the Yorkshire Council at Denaby. Denaby (118 for 1) beat Rossington by nine wickets.
Top Scorer Ellis
Yorkshire Council top scorer of the day on Saturday was Sid Ellis, Wath veteran who scored a sparkling 98 against Sheffield City Police at Wath. Sid was a Yorkshire colt in his younger days. Wath declared at 221 for 7 and the Police were dismissed for 184.
Riding League
Hallam and Denaby, South Riding Section “A” leaders, meet at Denaby on September 1st in the south Riding League semi-final for the W. P. Turner Cup. The semi-finalists will be drawn from Section “B” in which the leading positions are not finally resolved.
