Saturday’s Games
Shock For Denaby
Wath 282 for 7 Rockingham 135 for 7

For the second Saturday in succession Wath made the highest score in the competition, following up their total of 269 for 4 wickets against Rawmarsh by hitting up 282 for 7 in their home match with Rockingham on Saturday. Bernard Senior and young Jewsbury (picture) both passed the century mark, an unusual distinction in a Yorkshire Council innings. Senior scored 113 and Jewsbury was unbeaten with 100 to his credit when Wath declared. They were not able to force a win, however, and though Tommy Hargreaves took 6 wickets for 55, Rockingham, thanks to sound efforts by Jimmy Ivil (31) and Gill (not out 33) had 3 wickets on hand at the close although they had only scored 135 runs.
Frickley 209 Denaby & Cadeby 98
The result of the game between Frickley and Denaby at Frickley was the surprise of the day. Denaby being beaten by over 100 runs and thus sustaining a serious setback in their bid for a place in the Council final. Frickley hit out freely and consistent batting gave them a total of 209, (Morris, 24, Seagrave 21, Taylor 47, Dyson 30, Kaye not out 28).
Denaby soon found themselves in difficulties against the left arm slows of young Birkinshaw who had 5 for 57. A last wicket stand between W. Holland and youngster promoted from the second team and Sid Wild, who made 28 not out 9 respectively, took Denaby’s total to 98, a much more respectable score than at one time seemed likely.
Firbeck v Hickleton
Hickleton were rather surprisingly beaten at Firbeck, replying with only a couple of wickets while Reg. had only one victim. Rogers (50), Rose (31). Hutchinson (31). Ellis (not out 26) and Hare (not out 24) were responsible for most of Firbeck’s runs and apart from 35 by Alban Turner, by Reg. Probert and 35 by Charlie Overton the Hickleton batsmen quite failed to get going.
Mexborough 253 for 6 Rawmarsh 161 for 5
Runs were plentiful at Mexboro’ where the home side had Ralph Birkinshaw largely to thank for their big score of 253 for 6. Burkinshaw’s 150 not out a faultless innings in which he did not give a chance, was the highest score of his career. His previous best was 148 not out at Rotherham, made some three years ago while he was playing for Rawmarsh.
Mexboro’ declared but their bowlers never looked like getting Rawmarsh out and the visitors had no difficulty in playing out time. Wadsworth making 55 and Roberts 45 out of a total of 161 for five wickets.
Thorncliffe 110 Elsecar 111 for 1
Elsecar made short work of Thorncliffe and registered nine wickets win. Thorncliffe gave a poor display with the bat, only Bert Almond (29) making anything of a show, with the result that they were all out for 110.
Amos Woolley (37) helped Widdowson to give Elsecar a good start and subsequently Cookson and Widdowson took the score to 111 for one wicket, Widdowson being not out 61 and Cookson not out 13.
