The Offside Game.
Wath 4, Lincoln City Reserve 1
Wath gave an inspiring display on Friday when they defeated Lincoln in a decisive manner. After an early attack Lincoln were thrown on to the defence and Wath quickly scored. Bedford, who throughout played a useful game, was responsible for Wath’s first two goals. He initiated the movements which led to L. MURDEN and W. MOORE easily defeating Russell. They were splendidly worked for and thoroughly deserved.
Lincoln tried to stem the rot, but Bratley and young Hopper were always ready–indeed, Hopper played a fine game in Wheatley’s place at left back. The forwards were quick and played well together and the Lincoln’ halves could not bold them. It was the backs who saved and vet lost them the match. . They played the offside game to perfection, it was all offside for Wath but when they did break away—and that happened twice and successfully in the second half—the Lincoln defence was hopelessly beaten.
Shortly before the interval CAMPBELL scored Lincoln’s only goal, by a solo effort. HARGREAVES added Wath’s third and fourth goals following excellent play by Moore, E. Murden and Williams. The latter throughout the game was a clever opportunist, and all the forwards gave clever displays. Lincoln’s downfall was the playing of the offside game, and the halves and backs were not too unscrupulous in their tackling.
