Wath Almshouses in Cemetery Road

The above is a plan of the almshouses which it is proposed to erect in Cemetery. road, Wath, in accordance with the terms of the will of the late Mr. W. H. Gawtress, of Cross House. Wath-on-Dearne.

Mr. Gawtress, who died in July 1927 left the sum of £4500 for the provision of almshouses, and requested that they should be built on his’ estate near the canal. His executors placed this request before the Charity Commissioners, who, however, declined to adopt it owing to the unsuitability of the site.

They have now agreed with the executors to build the almshouses in Cemetery-road. The plan shown is the one adopted, and tenders for the erection of two houses are now being invited. They are to be bungalows, and will be built on the top side of Cemetery-road, facing Newhill, and will each have a spacious porch, large common room, bedroom, bath room and scullery. It is hoped that they will be ready for occupation this summer.

They will be well endowed, kept in excellent condition, and the occupiers will be well looked after. The house and adjoining grounds of Mr. Gawtreee were purchased by the Wath Urban District Council for street improvements and the establishment of a public market
