Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Monday 10 October 1921
Wath Athletic 0 Mexborough Town 1
In the first match at Wath Mexborough won 1-0. There was little to choose between the teams and both custodians–Cope (Mexborough) and Topham (Wath)—did fine work.
The only goal of the match came from Armitage after half an hour’s play. Four minutes from the close Minter – tested the Mexborough custodian with a fast low ground shot, which rebounded from Cope but Harrison, the home centre failed to follow the ball up, and Athletic’s last chance of equalising was gone.
The defence of Mexborough was excellent.
