Wath Golf Club Appoint a Youthful Captain
New Trophy Presented

The youngest men’s captain in the 31 years history of Wath Golf Club was appointed at the annual meeting on Wednesday. He is Mr C.J. Smith, of West Melton. Dr GH Johnson presided.

Mr A.P.L. Moore (joint secretary) submitted the committee’s annual report. He said the year had not been very successful financially, reverie you amounting to only £20 as against £70 6s 8d for the previous year.

The principal reason for this diminution in profit was increased in arrears of subscriptions, and members were again reminded of the help the gave by paying promptly. Another reason was the dropping competition fees, which amounted to £7 less than in 1935. Early in the year a more was purchased for £78 and it had been of great assistance in keeping the course in good condition.

Membership

there were now 124 members, of whom 70 were men; the total was a decrease of two. Mr WK Stanley in the captain’s price (the runner-up being Mr RH Lofthouse) and the Mitchell’s Cup; Mr C. J. Smith the Thompson Cup; and Mr C.M.P. Swift the Wade Cup.

Matches with played with Hickleton and Coley Lane, and an American tournament organised by the captain, Mr W.A. Foulness attracted a good deal of interest.

In the ladies section, Mrs Kilner won the Nicholson Rose Ball out right and also the captain’s price. The L.G.U. silver medal was awarded to Mrs G.Rear and the bronze medal to Mrs Clark.

Mr T.C. Nicholson had kindly given another trophy to replace the one won outright.

Mr Bownas had infused considerable enthusiasm into his duty as captain, and they were grateful for the work he had done.

Mr Shaw suggested the matches were not popular, but he expressed the hope that the new captain will continue the efforts of Mr Bownas to stimulate some interesting them.

The Chairman pointed out that it was up to the younger members to do that as some of them have passed matchplay.

Mr Grear warmly thanked the chairman for his services, and Dr Johnson, reply, said he was looking forward to a satisfactory year. What they wanted was support from the members.
