Wath – Then and Now

The startling change in the West Street area of Wath Is perhaps one of the major steps forward in the redevelopment of the town centre that has really been noticed by the residents.

Shops have been demolished in West Street, as far as Waddingtons, and shops in Church Street have also disappeared. It Is sometimes difficult to bring to mind straight away what the site was like only a few weeks ago, not to mention the scene many years ago.

The demolition of the buildings is part of the development plan, and the site is planned for the new civic hail and combined further education centre.

The Clerk to With Urban Council , Mr R. H. Fish, said he thought residents would be Interested to recall how the corner looked over 60 years ago, and he has two postcards of the area, one data 1905.

The picture shows that while the structure of the buildings has changed very little, practically everything else has,

The corner shop was a tailors, outfitters and boot factors, owned by J. T, Morley.

Our pictures shows Top—Church Street and the top of West Street; centre—West, Street as it was in former days and West Street as it is today.
