Yesterday’s Queen’s Birthday ” Honours list brought recognition to Mr. William Green of Fitzwilliam Street, Wath, who is awarded the M.B.E.

Mr. Green is chief chemist of the National Coal Board’s benzole refinery plant at Manvers Main Colliery. He is president of the Coke Oven Managers’ Association, and a past chairman of the Midland section.

A native of Sheffield, Mr. Green was educated at the old Central Secondary school, Sheffield and took part-time studies at Sheffield University. He worked at plants at several collieries before going to the old Manvers Main Colliery Co. as chief chemist in 1916.

In 1917 Mr. Green was involved in an accident in the laboratory which finally caused him to lose his sight. He returned to work after about 12 months.

While with the old Company he had technical control of the benzole refinery plant for over twenty years and was transferred to the new plant in 1956 as chief chemist.

Mr. Green is married and has one daughter, whose husband, Mr. H Cooper B.Sc., is technical control manager of the new optical glassworks at St. Asaph, North Wales,
