Wath Attack Fails at Worksop.

Worksop 2, Wath 1

Never can I remember the Worksop ground in such shocking condition. There was mud everywhere and all the efforts to improve it were vain. Yet the players mudlarked in such an interesting way that they provided capital entertainment.

Worksop were in a desperate position and made desperate team changes in an effort to gain a win on their own ground. Before the match they had lost five matches at Central. Avenue.

It must be said that Wath particularly in attack, were disappointing. There was an excuse, for early in the game Banks’s boot struck L. Murden’s face and caused a nasty gash over the eye. The trainer helped him off the field. He soon return with his eye plastered then he got two kicks on the ankle! His injury was painful, and his play was affected. Wath’s attack was at sixes and seven the defence was overworked.

Bratley will go on for ever and it was pleasing that at Central Avenue—the scene of many of his triumphs—he should play one of his best games of the season. He was always in the thick of the battle and many times he saved certain goals. But Whittaker was the hero of the match. He covered himself with mud and glory. On two occasions he made superb full-length saves from the dashing Worksop forwards. If I am any judge of a goalkeeper this lad is marked for quick, promotion. He was over-worked but all that he did he did well. He was beaten once in each half—and KITCHING was on both occasions the scorer.

His first goal was the happy sequel to a movement splendidly conceived and executed, Robinson sent the ball to Jones and the, winger returned to George Crownshaw. The latter headed forward to Kitching, who dashed between the backs and shot hard. Whittaker went full length but though he touched the ball he could not, stop it.

Kitching’s second – goal was the result of a characteristic dash,

Later, Wath reduced the arrears. It was a shot from 40 yards out by DAWBER. Best was unsighted by Plant.

Work soda deserved their win though there was ‘little between the teams. It was a remarkably clean game, just as the Denaby match was a week earlier.
