Yorkshire to Drive Off For New Golf Title…’hot’ favourite
Two Kilnhurst golfers will make the long trip to the east of Scotland next Saturday to represent Yorkshire in the Northern Area Final of the Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation’s national golf championship. Bill Taylor and Jack Haythorne, both members of Kilnhurst Working Men’s Club social section golf club will be in the 12-man Yorkshire side who will face the cream of mining golfers from England and Scotland.
Outstanding
Both men, who helped the Kilnhurst side take the South Yorkshire Club and Institute League Championship trophy for the second time last season, qualified for the county side with outstanding performances in the qualifying heat at Sitwell and Worksop last year.
Half the Yorkshire side is taken from the South Yorkshire area and other representatives are M. Wainwright from Wath Main colliery, T. N. Almond from Manvers, T. Eades, Highgate and R. Rowett of Dinnington.
First one
The tournament, the first of its kind ever held, will be staged at the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club, Edinburgh. Sides from Scotland, Durham, Yorkshire, and the North West fields will contest the 18- hole match for the right to enter the national final at Morpeth Golf Club, Northumberland, on June 6th. The winners and runners-up from Saturday’s match will be paired against the two winnings areas from the Southern zone – which consist of the South West, Derbyshire, Midlands, Kent and London.
Yorkshire are well fancied to lift the title and if they go through on Saturday, they are likely to be favourites to become first-ever holders of the trophy. As well as the team awards, there are also Individual prizes at stake, which the Yorkshiremen are confident of bringing back to this area.
